Ruth E. Darkis

The death of Ruth Ella Darkis occurred peacefully on September 4, 2024 at River View Manor in Bath, New Brunswick. Ruth was born in Bath, NB on August 13, 1934 to the late Carrie and Enoch DeMerchant. She was predeceased by her husband, George Darkis; Brothers, Milton, Clifford, and Darrel; Sisters, Pearl and Norma, and daughter in law, Sandra.

Ruth is survived by 5 children, Debra (Jerry Wood), Samuel (Donna Avery), Jane, Juanita (Joe Poirier), Sarah; 8 grandchildren Emily (Josh), Thomas (Tabitha), Carrie (Mike), Jason (Kimmy), Matthew (Chelsea), Maggie (Calder), Patrick (Nicole), Joey, 7 great grandchildren; Ryan, Adam, Katie, Kira, Connor, Cedric and Finn; Siblings, Dorothy Craig, Marlene Grant (Buster) Galen DeMerchant, Margaret Barter and Judy Pearson (Darryel); nephews, nieces, extended family as well as her beloved dog, Ginger.

Mum lived her life to the fullest. She helped dad on the farm and was a full time homemaker and mother. She believed that her children should experience as many interests as possible while growing up. She volunteered at our schools for hot lunches and music festivals among other things. She pushed piano lessons when there was a teacher nearby and there was always music in the home. She taught Sunday school and made the church and our involvement in the choir an important part of our lives. Church was very important to mum. She enjoyed bible study and had a massive collection of related books. She made sure we had summer camp and as many sports as we would play, basketball was a favourite as she had played in high school. From drama to skating lessons, she was always there pushing us to grow into well rounded humans.

Quilting and knitting were easy for mum and she loved to share that knowledge. I was not a good pupil but her friend, Lynn, excelled. She was known for her bountiful garden and she loved to cook. Her donuts, bread and especially her apple pies were well known. In her 20’s she decided to leave us with dad in the evenings while she took a book keeping course to help manage the farm. I don’t think she knew how good dad was at making fudge. In her 70’s, terribly afraid of heights, she got on a plane for the first time and flew to Vancouver to help her youngest move into a new home. She had quite a sense of adventure.

Mum was dedicated to her family. They were the most important part of her life.

Mum loved people. The staff at River View Manor were good to her and we are very appreciative of the care she received during this time.

Visitation will be held from L.R. Giberson Funeral Directors, 207 Burnham Rd. Florenceville-Bristol, NB, on Monday, September 9th, 2024 from 12:30 to 1:30 pm. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm in the L.R. Giberson Funeral Chapel. Rev. Vaughn Palin will be officiating. Interment will be in the Bristol Free Will Baptist Cemetery. For those who wish, memorial donations made to DunRoamin' Stray and Rescue, River View Manor, Free Will Baptist Cemetery, River Valley Cancer Support Group or Fielding Baptist Church would be appreciated.
